Students are advised to attend two hours of lessons each week although they may
choose to attend an hour a week. Students may attend Group classes (which have 4 to 8
students) or classes which have 1 or 2 students to suit their individual needs.
Those enrolling for the Certificate and Diploma courses are required to adhere to a pre-set
syllabus, which are revised and updated regularly. The Bharatanatyam dance syllabus has
been revised recently. The syllabus for the various disciplines can be purchased from the
Secretariat. Students are advised to sit for the examinations at the end of one or two academic
years after completing the minimum hours of instruction and upon the teacher finding them
ready. The minimum hours for single or double students are 35 and that for group classes is
The Certificate course takes a minimum of five years to complete. Students who attain a
minimum ‘C’ grade of 65 marks or above in the final examinations of the Certificate course
are eligible to proceed to the Diploma course, which takes a minimum of three years to
complete. External examiners from reputed institutions are invited to assess students from
Level 5 to 8.
Students who achieve a high standard of performance in the 8th year Diploma examination in
Vocal, Instrument or Dance may also be awarded the title of “Sangeetha Visharad”, “Vadya
Visharad” or “Natya Visharad’ accordingly.
The Academy also accepts the enrolment of students who wish to pursue a course in music or
dance but do not wish to join the formal programme. For these students, customised
programmes are arranged with the tutors.
